Optum San Diego Public Sector Staff in Action
Maple Canyon Clean-Up
The Optum San Diego Public Sector (OSDPS) Social Responsibility Committee adopted and sponsors the Maple Canyon Clean-Up three times a year. In conjunction with I Love a Clean San Diego, Optum staff and family members removed debris. A sign at the trailhead that includes the San Diego Access and Crisis Line phone number indicates that Optum has “adopted” Maple Canyon.
San Diego Youth Services
The OSDPS staff delivered Holiday Drive donations benefiting San Diego Youth Services (SDYS). New toys, nonperishable food, and gift cards for groceries were collected in efforts to combat food insecurity in San Diego County. SDYS encourages those who are able to give the gift of food, warmth, and stability to help save a young person’s life. OSDPS is honored to work with various organizations to make positive differences in the San Diego community.
OSDPS staff also volunteered at the San Diego Youth Services Youth Emergency Shelter. They sorted and inventoried donated items, cleaned out closets, and performed some light housekeeping. The San Diego Youth Services Youth Emergency Shelter is the only emergency night shelter program and drop in center in San Diego for homeless, runaway, and “street” youth. It provides a safe home and services to help youth return to their families or find alternative housing. OSDPS is honored to work with various organizations to make positive differences in the community.

Father Joe’s Villages
The OSDPS staff helped to prepare and serve lunch at Father Joe’s Villages. Father Joe’s Villages strives to prevent and end homelessness, one life at a time, through C.R.E.E.D.: compassion, respect, empathy, empowerment, and dignity. OSDPS is honored to work with various organizations to make positive differences in the community.
San Diego Food Bank
The OSDPS staff volunteered at the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank. Duties included cleaning, inspecting, sorting, packing, and labeling food products for distribution to individuals and families in need in communities throughout San Diego County. As the largest, local hunger-relief organization, the Jacobs and Cushman San Diego Food Bank also advocates for the hungry and educates the public about hunger-related issues. OSDPS is honored to work with various organizations to make positive differences in the community.
Choncho’s Rocks of Hope
The OSDPS staff participated in Choncho’s Rocks of Hope, where they hand painted rocks in honor of Jose Montaño. Jose died of brain cancer at age 11. He used his “Make-a-Wish request” to build a school playground, and his foundation supplies healthy snacks and toys to children battling cancer in local hospitals. The rocks are included in the healthy snack bags so that the recipients know someone is thinking about them.
San Diego Alpha Project
The OSDPS staff organized a health drive for the San Diego Alpha Project, which is a non-profit organization serving over 4,000 homeless men, women, and children in our region. Blankets, socks, towels, and pillows, as well as hygiene products such as wipes, deodorant, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and feminine products were collected and then delivered to
the San Diego Alpha Project office. San Diego Access and Crisis Line outreach materials were also included so that vital information is shared throughout our community.
